Frequently Asked Questions
I’m not fit. Should I get in shape first before coming to CrossFit?
Absolutely not. CrossFit is for everyone and everyone starts at a different fitness level. Iron Crossfit is exactly the place you need to be if you want to get in shape. We help individuals of all fitness levels – from beginners to elite athletes – reach their goals. We scale programs to each individual’s fitness level and make sure you pass Foundations prior to starting CrossFit as a participant in group classes.
I’m a woman. I just want to get toned. Will CrossFit make me bulky?
No. Many women are concerned that strength training will make them bulky. Instead, a solid strength training program – even with heavy weight – helps women achieve a lean, strong look without the bulk. Women who get bulky are specifically training long hours to gain large amounts of muscle mass with a stringent diet and supplement regimen designed to achieve that bulky look. To do so, they must have the genetics (very rare) AND train specifically with that goal in mind.
What does a CrossFit Class look like anyway?
Iron CrossFit Classes are 1-hour and are led by at least 1 coach, sometimes 2. A typical class structure includes:
· 5-10 minutes of warm up
· 5-10 minutes reviewing movements and standards
· 18-20 minutes working on Strength and/or Skills (Olympic Lifting, Power Lifting, Gymnastics, etc.)
· 10-20 minutes of a conditioning workout called a Met-Con (which is an abbreviation for Metabolic Conditioning) and is often referred to as a WOD (Workout of the Day)
· 5-10 minutes post WOD stretch/mobility
At times you may be working out as an individual or with partners or teams. You can expect to track your weights and results after each workout to concretely identify weaknesses and track your progress over time with our tracking platform called WODIFY. During workouts you can also expect coaches to critique your form and for other members to offer encouragement and motivation.
At CrossFit the loudest cheers are often for the last to finish because we value hard work and effort.
I’m not ready for CrossFit. Do you offer personal training?
Absolutely. We offer personal training packages for those who prefer to get started with one-on-one instruction. We also offer introductory level Foundations Classes to help our members on-ramp into group CrossFit classes in the safest manner possible. Contact us to go over your options.
I was injured. Can I still do CrossFit?
Too many people are scared into inaction because they have been injured at some point. If you have an acute injury like a sprain or pulled muscle, chances are that you may need some time off to rest, recover and regroup. In order to maintain a base level of fitness, you should look for ways to work out while recovering from injuries as your doctors and medical team allow. At Iron CrossFit, we meet our members where they are at in their recovery phase and focus on smart training. Let us know about the issues and limitations you face, and our trained coaches will help you find an option that works best for your circumstances. Our coaches can help you scale workouts to your abilities as determined by your doctors. We will instruct you on proper form and technique to help build you back from injury.
This is expensive. Why does a Crossfit membership cost more than one at a typical gym?
At Iron, we care about our members and their goals and it shows. Unlike typical globo gyms, we are not focused on just seling memberships. We are committed to helping our members achieve their fitness and health goals for years to come. Our members achieve real, tangible results because of the value we provide. Iron members receive well-thought out and designed programming and personal attention and coaching during small group classes that is more akin to personal training. Our members also receive education, nutritional advice, and an awesome community environment with regular social and charity events and opportunities to compete. We challenge you to find an investment that gives you greater returns on your health and fitness and overall happiness.
I’m joining … the Fire Department, Police Department, Military, etc. and I need to pass the physical fitness test. Will CrossFit help me?
Definitely. The CrossFit methodology has been proven to help recruits pass and dominate their physical fitness tests. For example, upon implementing CrossFit into the Florida Police Corps in Jacksonville, cadet’s physical fitness testing scores improved by 80%. Contact us to discuss your upcoming physical fitness testing and check out the discounts available to public safety workersand military.
You post your workout every day. Why do I need a membership? Can’t I just do this on my own?
You could, but it wouldn’t be nearly as effective. In addition to getting the benefit of our programming and the equipment to properly execute the workouts, an Iron Crossfit membership provides you with the personal attention of intelligent, professional coaches to teach and critique your form and motivate you to do your best. We also offer a platform to track your results over time to see how you are progressing so you can attack your weakness.
But one of the best reasons for coming to Iron Crossfit as opposed to working out home is our active community. At Iron, our supportive community atmosphere is unmatched. Our diverse community is highly motivating and includes law enforcement, teachers, business owners and professionals, nurses, doctors, lawyers, accountants, stay at home moms, executives, professors, sales other professionals, students, grandparents and more.
